Why does Chrome hate PDFs?

TURN THAT FROWN, UPSIDE DOWN!

No, really… Chrome doesn’t really hate PDFs, no matter what you’ve heard on the news about the two big tech companies.

In this post, I am going to walk you through getting rid of that pesky sad face Google Chrome throws at’ya when it won’t open a PDF link in your browser window.

To start, this is what I mean:

Google Chrome PDF error

Step 1: CHECK YOUR EXTENSIONS

Assuming you already have Chrome open – Open your menu palette, far right icon pictured here:  Screen shot 2013-05-08 at 9.18.56 AM, and select Tools > Extensions.

Step 2: ADD PDF EXTENSIONS FROM CHROME

Make sure you have ALL Extensions necessary for PDF viewing ‘enabled‘. If everything is already enabled and you are still having problems, you will need to add some extensions –  scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the link for ‘Get More Extensions’.

Step 3: LETS GO SHOPPING

Chrome PDF extension fix

You have now been redirected to the Chrome Web Store. Enter ‘pdf viewer‘ in the search bar. If it helps, change it so that you only display ‘Extensions‘ in your results. Select the Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) and PDF Viewer by Rob J extensions. These two should cover all your needs.

Step 4: IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED…

Reload those PDF pages and enjoy the power of Chrome!!!

Note: I have been a MAC power-user for over 7 years. I’ve enjoyed all the major web browsers and find that Chrome suits my needs presently. I rarely use Safari and FireFox.

WordPress iOS app…. Where’s the beef?

Wordpress iOS app.... Where's the beef?

I fully acknowledge that lately I have been mentally distracted. Maybe it’s the strong spring sun… Maybe it’s the constant stress of finances…. But when I download an app. More specifically, when I download a major app from a major technology, industry-changing giant like WordPress…. I expect it to work. Please look at the picture. You will notice I only have two options available to me. Am I the only one??

WordPress application should have a full left sliding list of tools. Mine has only two like you can see. Am I missing a step? Is there something I need to enable on my account? I will try and reinstall. I’m sure I am not the only one.

Vectors to the rescue

A new client has requested a website redesign. MPAC is a dance studio located in Port Jervis, NY on the NY, NJ, PA border. Thanks to Stanislav and All-silhouettes.com for the dancing vectors!

Photoshop – Create a Starburst Pattern

Tutorial for this Starburst. Gradient applied to final image.

This startburst pattern is being created using the shape tool. By creating a shape we can leave it vector for cross application support.

Note: I live by shortcuts so they will be thrown in for good measure. Read the rest of this entry

HarvestApp Review

As a freelancer it’s important for me to have one central application that I use to easily keep track of what I do. I first came across HarvestApp for the iPhone. It was as easy as 1 2 3…

HarvestApp

Track your billable time for free!

After you download the app and register for an account you can take the time to properly set up clients. The FREE version of the app allows for only two projects at a time. I’m okay with that limitation since the rest of the app is so flexible for a free program.

Register your account and begin sending professional invoices to all your clients, keep track of expenses for your taxes and stop losing valuable time as a freelancer. This link will take you to Harvest’s FREE registration page.

Don’t be fooled, Harvest makes you think you have to pay for the service, but read on the page very carefully, it offers the free version, just not as loud as the paid!

One option of working with that limitation would be to create yourself as an account and then using your TASKS as different projects you work on – if you are so lucky to have to juggle multiple projects.

I have yet to see an Android version of the App and will notify you when it is released.

I’m very pleased with how easy it is to access the same TIMESHEET from many different devices including iPods, iPhones, the internet and Droid devices.

Hands down, this App is a MUST HAVE!!! If you are the type of person who hates keeping a pen and paper record of your work, you NEED HarvestApp.

Create invoices, send PDFs of billing, edit hours manually, track expenses… it’s all in one place and best of all – ITS FREE!
