Why does Chrome hate PDFs?
TURN THAT FROWN, UPSIDE DOWN!
No, really… Chrome doesn’t really hate PDFs, no matter what you’ve heard on the news about the two big tech companies.
In this post, I am going to walk you through getting rid of that pesky sad face Google Chrome throws at’ya when it won’t open a PDF link in your browser window.
To start, this is what I mean:
Step 1: CHECK YOUR EXTENSIONS
Step 2: ADD PDF EXTENSIONS FROM CHROME
Make sure you have ALL Extensions necessary for PDF viewing ‘enabled‘. If everything is already enabled and you are still having problems, you will need to add some extensions – scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the link for ‘Get More Extensions’.
Step 3: LETS GO SHOPPING
You have now been redirected to the Chrome Web Store. Enter ‘pdf viewer‘ in the search bar. If it helps, change it so that you only display ‘Extensions‘ in your results. Select the Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) and PDF Viewer by Rob J extensions. These two should cover all your needs.
Step 4: IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED…
Reload those PDF pages and enjoy the power of Chrome!!!
Note: I have been a MAC power-user for over 7 years. I’ve enjoyed all the major web browsers and find that Chrome suits my needs presently. I rarely use Safari and FireFox.
